Open House / Fiberglassing & Composites Demonstration

The November meeting will be an Open-House / Fiberglassing demonstration at Paul Appelbaum's home. Paul is the scratch-builder of the famous C-17 jet.

This should be something you can really sink your teeth into: Paul worked building composite experimental aircraft for many years, including a stint with Burt Rutan. We covet his skills, and now a few of them can get transferred to us...

Doors open at 6:45pm. Meeting starts at 7:00. We'll do some preliminary stuff and check out Paul's shop, but the demo will start at 7:45 sharp.

    • Fun milling around one of the best equipped shops in the club. You might even get to see the C-17 sleeping.
    • Safety 10 - ten minutes from John DeLuca, Safety Officer
    • Paul will provide beverages, snacks and chairs; the demo will start at 7:45pm.
    The demo will consist of:
    - epoxy additives (micro balloons, cabosil, and cotton flock)
    - using correct fiber orientation
    - applying epoxy resin to fiberglass in between plastic to control resin content
    - bulkhead reinforcements
    - how to laminate a 90 degree outside corner without bridging
    - forming a custom fiberglass mounting cradle around a fuel tank
    - 3/4 ounce fiberglass techniques
    433 Breezewood Drive
    Ballwin, MO 63011
Thanks or being part of the best RC club in the Midwest!

P.S. the rotator image on our home page is one of Paul's scratch-built jets...

      SLRCFA Christmas Party 2017

It's exciting to give and get gifts, and we can get the ball rolling December 21st at the Central Baptist Church in Eureka, 601 North Central Avenue. Things to remember:

      Year in Review

We'll talk about our accomplishments in 2017 and our Vision for 2018. A big part of the night will be to make sure our QuickSTART members all get a chance to meet the "larger SLRCFA" membership.

      QuickSTART Raffle

      • If you're a member, bring an old plane or that foamy you never fly... we'll give it to one of our QuickSTART members as part of the QuickSTART raffle.
      • QuickSTART and Youth members: You'll be able to get tickets in the "QuickSTART Raffle" - no purchase necessary, but you must be at the meeting to paricipate. Additional tickets will be sold at the event, but only for QuickSTART and Youth members.

      • Everyone attending the event will get five raffle tickets. We'll be selling more at the event, too.
      • Raffle tickets will be sold at the event. We should have some seriously-nice prizes this year, thanks to Schaefer's and Mark Twain, but you have to be present to win.

      Gift Exchange

      • Everyone bring a wrapped gift valued at $20 for the gift exchange. Yes, we'll do the "Mean ole Santa" version.
      • Some guys build foam airframes, which is cool for a gift, too.
      • If you don't have a gift, come down anyway... you just won't participate in the exchange.

      No Food, but...

      • We're not doing food this year, so make sure you eat before youarrive at 7pm...
      • However, afterwards, we're all heading to Poor Richards to enjoy libations.
If you have any questions, e-mail at SLRCFAwebmaster@gmail.com or call 314.429.2884.

Thinking about joining? How about inviting a friend who's thinking about joining?!

      • Come on down to the Christmas Party, and bring your first-year fees. We'll take your application on-the-spot, and...
      • ...you'll be eligible for the gift exchange (if you brought a gift) and the member raffle.
      • You're AMA membership will be validated later, as well as your payment, then we'll mail you your 2018 SLRCFA membership card.

      See you there!

Learn How To Build A Drone

Always wanted to build your own quadcopter?

Our friends at FPV Frenzy have put together a step-by-step just for you!

This guide details all the steps required to build an FPV drone. I’ve built more quadcopters than I can remember(well, I probably could if I gave some more thought to it) but I remember how frustrating and difficult the first quad seemed.

This guide on building a quadcopter will take you all the way from basic soldering to fully assembling your quadcopter. It assumes you are a complete beginner, but you do know basic electronics(negative, positive, what voltage is), and you’re familiar with the parts of a quadcopter.
